ayurvedic treatment of thyroid: Why a Holistic Approach is Necessary for Optimal Health

Our western scientific understanding of life often can lead us to neglect the complexity of our health issues. For instance, you might be suffering with fatigue and weight gain, so you have a blood test and it reveals that your thyroid isn’t functioning well. That’s great, you think, because if you just follow the prescription that the doctor has given you, then you will get better. So, you take the medication and the blood tests now show that the hormone levels are better, but you still aren’t feeling as well as you like. You might think that all you have to do is take the medicine for a bit longer, and things will get better.

If you don’t understand how complex your body is, you can fall into the misconception that each organ in our body works independently. But, just treating a single organ can exacerbate your health problems. Just because the thyroid tests are in the right range, it doesn’t mean that the reasons underlying the thyroid problem have been corrected. If one bodily function is working properly, but another is not, even a proven medicine can turn out to be ineffective.

People often take thyroid hormones from to balance their thyroid, like synthetic herbal hormonal supplements. Fixing a hormonal imbalance, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that the condition has been corrected. You need to take into account all the other factors that have led to the imbalance in the first place.

Understanding Thyroid Disease

Thyroid disease is caused by the under- or over-functioning of thyroid glands. The thyroid gland is situated just below the Adam’s apple, and is required for the correct secretion of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are primarily responsible for maintaining your metabolism.

Generally, a thyroid problem is related to the digestive system, the digestive tract, and the metabolism. If you have any kind of digestive problem that lasts more than five years, then your thyroid can be affected. Even long-term anaemia can result in thyroid problems. So, while hormone medication can result in normalization of the thyroid, this artificial buffer does not treat the underlying causes, such as digestive imbalances or anaemia. You are still less than wonderful because the hormonal imbalance was only part of the problem.

How to Heal All the Way Through

Ayurveda looks at health from a holistic perspective. Ayurvedic practitioners are aware that they need to look at each person as a unique, holistic system to ensure their clients will function optimally. They do not focus on just a single aspect of a problem, because there is no use fixing one thing while letting go of another. That is why, in Ayurveda, we analyse different factors, like the bodily constitution, Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), imbalances, and other factors as well. Then we treat the whole person in a holistic fashion, using medicinal herbal treatments, body treatments, diet, lifestyle and other regimes. When your hormones balance naturally, then you feel better in every way.

We also have a deep understanding of how certain herbs and remedies work over time. Sometimes certain herbs are very effective in treating hormonal issues, but using these herbs excessively or for too long can be harmful. Even if an herb is effective in stabilising or curing a disease, continuing to use it can have serious negative effects.

At Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre, we are able to offer a deep insight into the holistic treatment of systemic disease. We are able to assess the way that long-term chronic depletions and imbalances have affected the entire body, and construct programmes and medicinal regimes that support effective healing and recovery. We are able to assess the effectiveness of current treatments, and explain whether or not certain treatment plans should be continued. We would love to help you heal all the way through.
