Treating Chronic Skin Ailments

Chronic skin complaints such as acne, eczema or psoriasis can in the long term cause permanent damage to several layers of skin. Scarring, for example, is a normal part of the healing process following any form of skin injury and the outcome of any form of skin disorder is no different. As soon as damage occurs below the skin surface a new area of skin begins to grow from collagen fibres. Collagen is the material which gives the skin its strength and elasticity, but unfortunately when the system is in emergency mode the growth is not as orderly as it would normally be so that the new area is not as smooth and perfect as before the damage was caused and a mark or a scar may remain. Another possibility is that too much collagen might be produced, in which case a thickened patch might result, or in other cases a loss of tissue might create pitting. Yet another outcome might be hyperpigmentation, which can produce a variety of coloured patches, ranging from white, pink, red and brown through to black. The drying up and cracking of the skin can also activate the autonomic nervous system, creating irritations such as a sensation of pins and needles.

To minimise the likelihood of any of these problems simply lubricating the surface of the skin is not adequate. The skin is the largest organ in our body and to repair it effectively it is also necessary to supply it with nutrients from within. In our clinic we therefore utilise a variety of internal medicines as well as external preparations to effect a repair following treatment of any skin condition.
