A 9-month weight loss program built around your body type, not against it. Run from Sydney by Raman Das Mahatyagi (30+ years’ clinical experience), the YATAN program works on digestion, fat-tissue metabolism, liver and kidney function, and movement — so the weight you lose stays off. $214.49/week, with a 17% discount for paying the program upfront. In-clinic at Gordon NSW or telehealth Australia-wide.
Quick Answer
The Yatan Ayurvedic Weight Loss Program is a 9-month structured plan that addresses weight at its root: slow digestion, poor elimination, and an imbalance in the body type that decides where fat is stored. Classical Ayurveda calls this pattern Sthaulya or Medoroga.
Treatment runs across three phases — first opening the body’s channels (months 1–3), then reshaping and slimming with the Yatan ‘Cut and Paste’ yoga system (months 3–6), then stabilising the results (months 6–9). You’ll get customised herbs (Guggulu, Triphala, Trikatu, Methi), a meal plan built around your dosha, and a yoga routine you can actually do. $214.49/week, with 17% off if you pay the program upfront. Obesity is a problem that affects an increasing number of people, and there is no doubt that some modern food production methods, such as processing and the use of hormones, are a part of the problem. Certain life-style factors can also make the goal of weight loss much harder, and if your metabolism becomes sluggish, fat is more likely to be deposited in different places (stomach, thighs, hips etc.) according to your constitution (Ayurvedic body type).
Serious issues such as metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance can follow. This is when an effective weight loss program become paramount.

What is the Ayurvedic approach to weight loss?
Your individual dosha or body type matters more than calorie count in real weight loss. The pattern Ayurveda calls Sthaulya (excess weight) and Medoroga (disorder of the fat tissue, Medas dhatu) arises when there is a metabolic imbalance or when the digestive process — Agni — is not working well. The cause varies between people, and it is not always about an unhealthy diet. Stress alone can slow the metabolic rate considerably.
The Ayurvedic weight loss program involves:
- Improving digestion and changing the pathways of fat accumulation
- Addressing liver and kidney function for proper elimination
- Building a workable protein/carbohydrate/fat balance in a meal plan that fits your dosha
Building flexibility, strength and fitness through a customised yoga and exercise routine
Your Body Type Decides Where Fat Goes
Two people can eat the same diet and gain weight in entirely different places. That’s because each dosha has its own pattern of fat storage and its own reason for putting it there. Your meal plan, herbs, and yoga sequences are built around this pattern.
Kapha
Where fat sits: Even distribution, hips, thighs, chest, arms. Soft, smooth, holds water
What drives it: Slow metabolism, sweet/heavy/cold foods, daytime sleep, low activity
What helps: Warm spices (Trikatu, ginger), morning movement, lighter dinner, no snacking
Pitta
Where fat sits: Middle (belly, love handles). Firmer build, may have visceral fat
What drives it: Stress, irregular meals, fried/spicy foods, late eating, alcohol
What helps: Cooling bitter greens, regular meal timing, stress reduction, moderate cardio
Vata
Where fat sits: Less common pattern. When present, sits around belly with thin limbs
What drives it: Erratic eating, skipping meals, sugar cravings from anxiety, late nights
What helps: Warm grounding foods, regular meal times, daily routine, calming yoga
What are the benefits?
When digestive and elimination processes are optimised, weight loss can be more quickly experienced. The body loses weight in such a way that it becomes more ‘symmetrical’, and the skin attains a better tone. The mind, as well as the body, begins to feel lighter. There is no feeling of deprivation; food actually becomes more satisfying. You become more ‘in tune’ with your body’s rhythms.

Our YATAN Weight Loss Program
The duration of the weight loss program is 9 months.
Over this time, you will have a series of Ayurvedic consultations which focus on holistic fat loss through sustainable whole-body transformation and allow for ongoing review, adjustment and feedback as you progress in your weight loss journey.
The YATAN Weight Loss Program is tailored to your needs and consultation times can be adapted to suit your requirements and progress.
All dietary advice will be given according to your dietary likes and preferences so you can still enjoy your life fully with no restrictions, and also benefit by having a more healthy body.
Months 1-3 — Opening the Channels
The first 3 months of the Program is focused on opening the body’s communication pathways through nerves, organs, connective tissue, and muscle. We will do this through holistic detoxification, a special exercise program, dietary advice, and Yoga practice.
We will invest this time in loosening the body’s fat stores, opening the channels for whole-body health communication, creating increased flexibility in the organs, nerves, muscles and joints, and improving the connections of organ systems which may have been impacted by muscular and nerve stiffness/stagnation.
Months 3-6 — Shaping and Slimming (Cut & Paste System)
The next 3 months of the Weight Loss Program will be spent utilising the open communication pathways to shape the body and help you to feel stronger and healthier. We will do this through attuning your special exercise and diet program to your body’s needs.
Our focus for the second part of the program will be on shaping and slimming the body by using our special yoga program in which the ‘Cut and Paste’ System dissolves and shifts excessive fat in different parts of the body.
Months 6-9 — Stabilising and Glowing
The final 3 months of this Program are focused on encouraging your new healthy radiance to shine and bloom. We will do this through making customised adaptations to your special diet and exercise program.
You’re going to be seeing weight loss through the scales during this time. You will experience a stabilizing of your innate grace and beauty. You may experience feelings of lightness, improved aura emissions, clarity, increased energy, and you will be glowing from blooming from the inside out.

The Herbs in Your Program
Herbs are prescribed individually after a full assessment of your dosha and current state. Never self-prescribe — wrong herbs in the wrong combination can shift weight in the wrong direction or affect medications you’re already on.
Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) — the classical lipid resin
Used in Ayurveda for several thousand years on conditions that today would be called dyslipidaemia and metabolic syndrome. Modern studies show it modulates lipid metabolism. Often combined with other herbs in formulations like Triphala Guggulu or Medohar Guggulu.
Triphala — daily elimination and gentle detox
A blend of three fruits (Amalaki, Bibhitaki, Haritaki). Supports the colon, which Ayurveda considers central to weight management. When elimination is sluggish, fat metabolism slows. Taken at night with warm water.
Trikatu — three peppers, fires up Agni
Black pepper, long pepper (Pippali), and ginger. Stimulates digestive fire (Agni) — the engine that processes food into nutrition or stores it as fat. Used in Kapha-dominant weight patterns.
Vrikshamla / Garcinia (Garcinia indica)
Contains hydroxycitric acid. Traditional South Indian use for appetite regulation and lipid balance. The Western ‘Garcinia cambogia’ supplements are a relative of this herb.
Methi / Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum)
Supports insulin sensitivity and slows the absorption of carbs. Useful for the weight-gain-with-cravings pattern often linked to insulin resistance.
Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa)
Means ‘renews the body’. Supports kidney function and helps reduce water retention. Useful when weight is accompanied by puffiness, swelling, or sluggish elimination.
Haridra (Curcuma longa) — turmeric
Anti-inflammatory. Chronic low-grade inflammation is now understood to drive insulin resistance and abdominal weight gain. Turmeric is a daily kitchen staple in the program.

How This Differs From Calorie-Counting Diets
Ayurvedic Weight Loss
- Built around your individual dosha
- Treats the cause — slow Agni, weak elimination, dosha imbalance
- No restrictions on food types you enjoy; works around your preferences
- Includes herbs, yoga, lifestyle, stress and sleep adjustments
- 9-month structured plan with phased changes
- Weight redistribution by dosha — ‘symmetrical’ loss
- Sustainable; results hold after the program ends
- Includes consultations, review, and adjustment
Conventional Calorie Dieting
- One-size-fits-all calorie target
- Treats the symptom — excess weight
- Often eliminates entire food groups (carbs, fats)
- Diet and exercise only
- Short bursts followed by relapse
- Weight comes off where the body decides
- Yo-yo pattern common
- Self-managed; no feedback loop
If you’ve been on three or more diets in the last five years, calorie restriction is not your problem. Your body type, your digestive fire, and your stress patterns are. The program addresses those.
Eating Patterns for Weight Loss
These are general principles — your personal plan will be more specific based on your dosha. But this is the direction the program moves you in.
Foods that help
- Warm freshly cooked meals (a Kapha-pacifying base)
- Vegetables — leafy greens, bitter gourd, asparagus, beetroot, pumpkin
- Spices — turmeric, ginger, black pepper, cumin, coriander, fennel
- Light grains — millet, barley, quinoa, brown basmati
- Pulses — mung dal, red lentils, chickpeas
- Honey (raw, unheated, in small amounts in the morning)
- Warm water sipped through the day
- Herbal teas — ginger, fennel, cumin-coriander-fennel (CCF)
- Largest meal at midday when Agni is strongest
Foods that work against you
- Cold drinks and iced water (extinguish Agni)
- Heavy dairy — cheese, ice cream, yoghurt at night
- Refined sugar, sweets, soft drinks
- Fried foods and deep-fried snacks
- Processed and packaged foods
- Excess wheat (white bread, pastries)
- Late-night meals after 8 pm
- Snacking between meals (interrupts Agni)
- Alcohol — particularly beer (Kapha) and spirits

Meet Your Practitioner — Raman Das Mahatyagi
Raman Das is the principal Ayurvedic practitioner at Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre in Sydney. 30+ years of clinical experience, private practice since 2000, author of YATAN Yoga and YATAN Yoga Therapy. The Cut & Paste yoga system used in this program is his own method, refined over decades of clinical practice with Australian patients.
Common Questions About the Program
Q: Is the Ayurvedic Weight Loss Program suitable for everyone?
A: The program suits most adults who want sustained weight loss without restrictive dieting or pharmaceutical appetite suppressants. It’s particularly useful if you’ve tried conventional diets repeatedly without lasting results. If you have a major medical condition (diabetes on insulin, recent surgery, pregnancy, severe heart conditions), book a free 10-minute call first so Raman Das can confirm whether the program is appropriate or whether some adjustments are needed.
Q: How much weight can I expect to lose in 9 months?
A: Weight loss is highly individual and depends on starting weight, dosha, lifestyle, and how closely you follow the plan. The program is designed for sustained loss rather than rapid drop — typically 0.5 to 1 kg per week during phase 1 and phase 2, then stabilising in phase 3. We do not promise specific numbers because we treat the cause, not chase a scale target. What we can say: the loss that comes off this way tends to stay off.
Q: What is the ‘Cut and Paste’ yoga system?
A: It is Raman Das’s own yoga method, refined from his 30+ years of clinical practice. The premise is that certain asana sequences (postures), held and combined in specific ways, can dissolve and shift fat from one part of the body and redistribute the body’s tone more evenly. It is taught individually based on your dosha and where your weight pattern sits. You’ll learn it during phase 2 (months 3-6).
Q: Do I have to give up foods I love?
A: No. The program works around your dietary likes and preferences, not against them. Ayurveda treats the cause of weight gain — slow digestion, weak elimination, dosha imbalance — so the diet is about timing, combinations, and what to add as much as what to reduce. Most patients find they crave the offending foods less once digestion is rebalanced.
Q: Can the program be done by telehealth from outside Sydney?
A: Yes. Yatan offers telehealth consultations Australia-wide. Customised herbs are posted directly to you. The yoga program is taught via video sessions. For best results we recommend at least one in-person assessment if possible, but the entire 9 months can be done remotely if needed.
Q: How much does the program cost in total?
A: $214.49 per week paid weekly across the 9 months. If you pay the full program upfront, you receive a 17% discount. Herbs are an additional cost based on your individual prescription. Call 1300 552 260 for the full breakdown and an exact quote based on your starting consultation.
Q: Will I be prescribed appetite suppressants or weight-loss drugs?
A: No. The program uses customised diet, lifestyle, yoga, and classical Ayurvedic herbs only. You won’t be prescribed any pharmaceutical appetite suppressants, fat blockers, or weight-loss drugs. If you’re currently on prescription weight-loss medication, tell us during your first consultation — we won’t ask you to stop without your prescribing doctor’s involvement.
Q: What happens after the 9-month program ends?
A: Most patients continue with optional periodic check-ins (every 3 or 6 months) and seasonal Panchakarma cleansing if appropriate. The program is built to make you self-sufficient by month 9 — you’ll know your dosha, your meal patterns, your yoga routine, and how to read your body’s signals. Recurring weight gain becomes far less likely once these patterns are in place.
Q: Can Ayurveda help with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome?
A: Yes. The program directly addresses the root patterns that drive insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome (E88.81): slow digestion, accumulated metabolic waste (Ama), low Agni, and Kapha-Medas imbalance. Herbs like Methi (fenugreek), Guggulu, and Haridra (turmeric) have been studied for their effects on glucose and lipid metabolism. Always continue any prescribed medication for diabetes or hypertension under your GP’s care — Ayurvedic care runs alongside, not instead of, medical treatment.
Q: What if I miss a consultation or fall off the plan?
A: Real life happens. The program is built around adjustment — if you miss a phase, slip during travel, or have a stressful month, we adjust the plan rather than restart. Consultation times can be rescheduled as needed. The key is to not disappear entirely; even a short check-in is enough to keep you on track.
