What is an Ayurvedic consultation?

An Ayurvedic consultation at Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre is a 60-minute assessment with Raman Das Mahatyagi, an Ayurvedic practitioner (Vaidya) with over 30 years of experience. He examines your pulse, tongue, eyes, skin and breathing, and takes a detailed history of your digestion, sleep, diet, routine and stress. From this he identifies your Prakriti (your natural constitution: Vata, Pitta, Kapha or a combination) and your Vikriti (your current imbalance), then gives you a personalised diet, lifestyle and herbal plan. The initial consultation is 60 minutes and costs $139. Follow-ups are $51 to $106. Available in clinic in Gordon, Sydney, or by telehealth anywhere in Australia. Herbal preparations are quoted separately.

In Clinic or by Telehealth

You can see Raman Das in person at the clinic in Gordon, on Sydney’s North Shore, or by video from anywhere in Australia.

In clinic (Gordon NSW)

The full assessment, including pulse, tongue, eye and skin examination.

By telehealth (Australia-wide)

The consultation runs the same way and takes the same 60 minutes. Some parts of the physical assessment are adapted for video. Raman Das will ask you to show your tongue and eyes to the camera, and will rely more heavily on your detailed history, your digestion, sleep and energy patterns, and direct questioning. Most people find it works well. If he thinks you would be better assessed in person, he will say so.

The Ayurvedic Assessment (Ashtavidha Pariksha)

Classical Ayurveda uses an eightfold examination of the patient, known as Ashtavidha Pariksha, alongside a broader assessment of the person (Rogi Pariksha) and the condition (Roga Pariksha). This is what that looks like in practice:

Pulse (Nadi Pariksha)

Your pulse is read for amplitude, rhythm, volume, temperature, movement and strength. This gives information on your heart, endocrine system and cell function.

Tongue (Jihva Pariksha)

Shape, surface texture, thickness, colour and coating. This gives information on your pancreas, gall bladder and digestive tract function.

Eyes (Drik Pariksha)

Colour, shape, movement and shine. This gives information on your liver, pancreas, gall bladder, brain function, iron absorption, and the accumulation of ama (metabolic waste) in your system.

Breath (Shabda and Sparsha Pariksha)

Rhythm (slow or fast, deep or shallow), and the temperature, moisture and length of the flow. This gives information on your stress levels, endurance and cellular stress.

Skin (Sparsha Pariksha)

Soft or dry, rough or smooth, cold or warm, clammy or oily. This gives information on mucus status, assimilation, and mineral or nutritional deficiency.

Form and appearance (Akriti Pariksha)

A physiognometry assessment including face reading and body-shape assessment, giving information on stamina, temperament and behaviour.

Raman Das also draws on traditional Vedic observational practices, including palmistry and face reading, which form part of his broader approach and are available as separate consultations. These are not medical diagnostics.

On Arrival

When you arrive for your first Ayurvedic consultation you will fill in a form with your personal details, including the main reason you have come to see me and your health concern. If you are not really sure why you have come (it does happen!), or you do not have any particular concerns, do not worry. After your assessment I can indicate to you your body’s specific needs.

Taking Your Patient History

During and following your Ayurvedic assessment we will discuss your:

  • Family medical history
  • Current lifestyle and daily routines
  • Current diet and eating habits
  • Relationships
  • Menstrual cycles and pregnancies (if female)
  • Past experiences, to help understand your temperament, any tendency to recurrent sickness, and your natural likes and dislikes

What You Will Know by the End

The complete assessment allows Raman Das to determine:

  • Your Prakriti: your unique constitutional type. This is the balance you were born with and were meant to have: Vata, Pitta, Kapha, or a combination.
  • Your Vikriti: your current health status and where you have drifted out of balance.
  • How your current patterns, if left unchanged, may affect your long-term wellbeing.
  • The Ayurvedic formulations appropriate to your current state.
  • Your customised diet, lifestyle and exercise program.
  • Whether any other treatments would help, and whether you should also be seeing your GP or another practitioner. The full procedure takes one hour.

What You Get Out of It

You will:

  • Have a clearer picture of your overall state of health: mental, physical and emotional.
  • Understand which foods and lifestyle choices suit you and which do not.
  • Understand your do’s and don’ts and where something you enjoy conflicts with your health, you will be advised on what you can do to minimise the impact rather than simply told to stop.
  • Feel more confident and less indecisive about the path you are on.
  • Be advised if you need further help from your GP or another health practitioner.

Together we will build an easy-to-follow, step-by-step program. We target the major problems first so that you can function normally in daily life, and then work on the underlying causes.

How to Prepare

You do not need to do anything special, but the consultation is more useful if you:

  • Bring a list of any medications and supplements you take, with doses.
  • Bring any recent blood tests or medical reports, if you have them.
  • Avoid a heavy meal, coffee or vigorous exercise in the hour before your appointment. These all change the pulse and can obscure the reading.
  • Do not brush or scrape your tongue that morning, so the coating can be assessed.
  • Note down the two or three questions that matter most to you.
  • For telehealth: sit somewhere with good natural light so your tongue and eyes are clearly visible on camera.

Follow-Up Consultations

Depending on your health concerns, you will usually be advised to have a follow-up consultation 2 to 4 weeks after your initial appointment. Your progress is reviewed and your program adjusted.

Which follow-up should you book?

Standard (30 min)

The usual choice. Review progress and adjust.

$81 AUD

Extended (45 min)

If you have more questions or several concerns to discuss.

$106 AUD

Short  (15 min)

If you are continuing with the same preparations and advice and just need a brief progress review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does an Ayurvedic consultation cost?

A: The initial 60-minute consultation is $139. Follow-ups are $106 for 45 minutes, $81 for 30 minutes, or $51 for 15 minutes. Herbal preparations, if recommended, are quoted separately. A free 10-minute introductory phone call is also available.

Q: How long is the initial consultation?

A: Sixty minutes. That covers the physical assessment, your full history, and the diet, lifestyle and herbal plan that comes out of it.

Q: What happens in an Ayurvedic consultation?

A: Raman Das examines your pulse, tongue, eyes, skin and breathing, then takes a detailed history covering your digestion, diet, sleep, routine, stress and family history. From this he identifies your constitution (Prakriti) and your current imbalance (Vikriti), and builds you a personalised plan.

Q: What is Nadi Pariksha, or pulse diagnosis?

A: Nadi Pariksha is the Ayurvedic reading of the pulse. Rather than simply counting beats, the practitioner assesses amplitude, rhythm, volume, temperature, movement and strength, which gives information about the heart, the endocrine system and cellular function.

Q: What are Prakriti and Vikriti?

A: Prakriti is your natural constitution. The balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha you were born with. It does not change. Vikriti is your current state, and how far you have drifted from that baseline. Ayurvedic care works to bring Vikriti back towards Prakriti.

Q: What is ama?

A: Ama is the Ayurvedic term for metabolic waste or undigested residue that accumulates when digestion is weak. It is assessed through the tongue coating, the eyes and the pulse, and clearing it is often the first step in a treatment plan.

Q: Can I have the consultation online?

A: Yes. Raman Das consults by video anywhere in Australia. The consultation runs the same way and takes the same 60 minutes. He will ask you to show your tongue and eyes to the camera and will rely more on detailed history and questioning. If he feels you would be better assessed in person, he will tell you.

Q: Do I need to prepare anything?

A: Bring a list of your medications and supplements, and any recent blood tests. Avoid a heavy meal, coffee or hard exercise in the hour beforehand, as these change the pulse. Do not scrape your tongue that morning, so the coating can be read.

Q: Can I bring my blood test results?

A: Yes, and it helps. Ayurvedic assessment does not replace medical testing. Raman Das reads your results alongside the Ayurvedic picture.

Q: Is the cost of herbs included in the consultation fee?

A: No. Customised Ayurvedic preparations are made up for you after the consultation and quoted separately, so you always know the cost before agreeing to anything.

Q: How soon should I book a follow-up?

A: Usually 2 to 4 weeks after your initial consultation, so your progress can be reviewed and the program adjusted.

Q: How many consultations will I need?

A: It depends entirely on the concern and how long you have had it. Long-standing complaints generally take longer than recent ones. Raman Das will give you a realistic picture at your first appointment rather than committing you to an open-ended course.

Q: What if I do not really know what is wrong with me?

A: That is completely fine, and it happens often. You do not need a diagnosis to book. The assessment itself will indicate what your body needs.

Q: Will Ayurveda replace my doctor or my medication?

A: No. Ayurvedic care at Yatan is intended to work alongside your conventional medical care. Keep your GP informed, and never stop prescribed medication without your doctor’s advice. If Raman Das believes you need medical attention, he will tell you.

Q: Is Ayurveda covered by private health insurance in Australia?

A: Cover varies between funds and has changed in recent years. Check directly with your health fund before booking.

Q:  Do you consult children?

A: Raman Das can advise on whether Ayurvedic care is suitable for a child, and will always recommend that the child remains under the care of their GP or paediatrician.

Q: Where is the clinic?

A: Suite 28, 924 Pacific Highway, Gordon NSW 2072, on Sydney’s North Shore. Clinic hours are Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.30pm and Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm.

Q: How do I book?

A: Call 1300 552 260, message WhatsApp on +61 410 476 099, or Request a call back. If you would like to talk first, book a free 10-minute call.
