Could Your Low Energy, Dry Skin, and Weight Problems Indicate Hypothyroidism?

What is the function of the thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is responsible for the production of hormones that control our metabolic rate; in Ayurvedic terms, it controls the Agni (metabolic “fire”). The hormone thyroxine acts like a spark plug.

What exactly is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism has become a very common phenomenon in our society. This is large because of lifestyle factors and stresses, together with improper diet.  A condition of Vata – Kapha aggravation can arise, resulting in a slowing down of the metabolic rate. These two doshas are opposites and the combination gives rise to a conflict.

What are the symptoms?

A slow metabolic rate can affect any system in the body, so the symptoms are many and varied. Some of the most common are:

  • Tired all the time
  • Difficulty controlling weight
  • Intolerance of cold
  • Lethargy
  • Depression
  • Cramps
  • Weakness
  • Dry skin, hair
  • Slow memory and impaired thinking
  • Impaired fertility
  • puffiness around the eyes
  • low body temperature

How can Ayurveda help?

The Ayurvedic approach is perfectly geared to restore the necessary balance. The treatment includes:

  • Careful consideration of diet – foods that help, foods that hinder
  • Herbal medicines – to enhance the metabolism and to induce calm
  • Exercises – Yogic and breathing exercises to ‘massage’ and stimulate the thyroid and other endocrine glands by improving blood flow to these parts. These glands work as a family, between them, controlling all the body’s functions and the entire endocrine system needs to be balanced if all systems are to run smoothly.
