The Benefits Of Colonic Irrigation

Colonic irrigation is not a new therapy. Its exact origins are uncertain but a colon cleanse is something that has certainly been used for thousands of years by many ancient and modern tribes as a form of body cleanse. It was an important part of Taoist teaching and is still one of the fundamental practices of yoga training.

The purpose of colonic irrigation is to remove the build-up of waste in the lining of the large intestine which, if allowed to accumulate over a long period, solidifies and hinders proper absorption, assimilation and elimination. This treatment is called a bowel cleanse or colon detox.

In Ayurvedic treatment, colonic irrigation takes the form of the medicated enema treatment known as Basti. This is one of the components of the Panchakarma detoxification program (Detox Diet Plan), and is much more complex than the everyday colonic irrigation treatment. Herbal decoctions are made up according to the individual constitution. These have the ability to penetrate the build-up, slowly dissolving and removing it. The colon is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria which would be largely washed away if plain warm water was used, but in the Basti treatment specific herbs are utilised, both to feed the good bacteria and to create a good acid-alkaline balance in the gut. The taste and smell of herbs is an important factor in selecting the best for the purpose as some will attract and others repel particular types of bacteria. This form of treatment provides the best detox treatment for the body and colon.

After the natural colon cleanse process, medicated oils are introduced to smooth the surface of the gut lining, which will by now be quite sensitive. For this reason the patient is advised as to the careful selection of foods in the colon cleanse diet which will avoid irritation and accelerate repair to the wall of the gut. These might include mung beans, rice and Ayurvedic rock salt. Turmeric is also known to be highly beneficial to the gut. After two days a normal diet can be resumed. Finally, the patient is advised to rest on the day after treatment.

When conducted in this careful manner colonic irrigation is both safe and effective, but if the correct precautions are not taken constipation is likely to follow and the colonic irrigation benefits will not be enjoyed.
