Ayurvedic Treatment For Female Incontinence

Incontinence is much more common in women than in men. This embarrassing condition can have many causes, some of the most common being:

  • Weak or damaged muscles of the bladder or pelvic floor
  • Stress, either emotional or due to past life events
  • Certain neurological conditions
  • Nerve damage during childbirth or as a result of surgery
  • Food allergies
  • Pressure on the lower abdomen caused by pregnancy or being overweight
  • Lack of oestrogen
  • Certain medications
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pre-diabetic symptoms

As there are so many causes the Ayurvedic approach to treatment varies greatly between individuals, the quickest results often being obtained when the cause lies in muscle weakness. Ayurveda has medicines  in the form of herbal or mineral formulas which are effective in repairing the bladder wall; sometimes it is also necessary to correct a deficiency. Particular care is taken to find out  whether the problem is triggered by certain foods, for example eating a lot of sweets or white bread can cause excessive urination.

One patient who suffered the problem after eating  pizza discovered that it no longer happened when the pizza was well baked. You will also receive dietary advice regarding foods that can help, such as dry dates (three daily for a few months) and almonds, and foods which aggravate the problem, such as citrus fruits and yoghurt.

Certain yogic exercises can be very helpful,  including Ashwani Mudra, Pawanmuktasana and Shalabhasana – the locust posture.
