Ayurvedic Treatment For Poor Memory

As we become older it is quite normal for our memory to become less efficient, as the production of brain hormones declines. The neuron cells tend to dry out and there is a reduction in electrical conductivity. Menopause and andropause are also times in our lives when we may notice an increase in episodes of forgetfulness. When the problem occurs at an earlier age it is more likely to be caused by a poor blood supply to the brain, or to any of a variety of causes that include hormone deficiency, constant exposure to electromagnetic fields, drugs or chemotherapy, genetic factors or quite simply to poor lifestyle which causes a disruption in the body’s biorhythms. A disorderly lifestyle can cause massive disruption to the functioning of the central nervous system.

Ayurvedic treatment for poor memory involves initially analyzing the cause so that the appropriate medicines can be chosen. According to Ayurveda, it is generally a case of excess Vata invading the brain, frequently as a result of some form of stress, and poor circulation results. If there is any underlying sickness this will be treated at the same time. There are many Ayurvedic medicines that prove highly effective in enhancing brain and memory function: these include Brahmi (Bacopa), Mandukparni (Gotu Kola), and Licorice.

Yogic practices which can be highly beneficial include: Uttanpadasana, Shoulder Stand, Locust Posture, and the breathing exercise Nadi Shodana Pranayama – all are described in the Yoga books: Yatan YogaandYatan Yoga Therapy’, available from our online bookshop. Regular use of the Neti Pot is also highly beneficial ( for details on its use see our YouTube video).

If memory loss is not treated properly in its primary stages it can lead to dementia over time.
