Yoga In Ayurvedic Treatment

For thousands of years Ayurvedic scholars have accepted the importance of yoga. They have realised that medicine is not all that is required for good health. On delving into their literature we can see that they were searching for ways to treat the mental and spiritual aspects of illness as well as the physical. When we looked deeply into the yoga texts we can see what it was that attracted them.

The fact is that when yogic treatments are added to Ayurvedic medicines the results are greatly enhanced.

Let us take as an example a woman of 50 going through the menopause, suffering from hot flushes. Her Ayurvedic treatment includes Ayurvedic medicines and attention to diet but this is not sufficient as her circulation is poor and her metabolism slow. This means that nutrients are not readily transported. Yoga practice provides an excellent means of speeding up the metabolism. However, many yoga exercises would be unsuitable as they might move the toxins more quickly at the same time and worsen the symptoms. Sheetali Pranayama provides the ideal solution; this gentle breathing exercise cools the body and mind.

Ayurvedic treatment and yoga each has its own benefits and limitations. It is also essential to pick the right kind of yogic practice and to perform it at the right time, or harm can be done. Treating the body by integrating these two systems is like peeling an onion; the body of the onion consists of many layers but all of these together form the onion. In treating illness we must treat one layer at a time.

At the Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre we constantly encourage our patients to introduce yogic practices alongside their Ayurvedic treatment. The results we obtain from this combination are outstanding. To enjoy the benefits yourself call us to book a consultation on 1300 552 260
