Oil Pulling Therapy Teeth Benefits

There has been a great deal of interest in oil pulling in recent years and many claims have been made with regard to the benefits of oil pulling. As always, many of these claims are anecdotal but what is the real science behind the practice? Does oil pulling really work?

What is oil pulling?

Oil pulling is not a new invention. In fact, there are references to it in the ancient Ayurvedic literature and it is a part of Panchakarma – the traditional Ayurvedic practice of detoxification. It involves swishing an oil around the mouth for anything between 5 and 20 minutes, then spitting it out into the sink.

What kind of oil is used for oil pulling and what are the oil pulling benefits of such a strange practice?

Various vegetable oils are suitable and these include sesame, mustard and coconut oils, but these need to be of high quality and unrefined. In Ayurveda multiple herbs are often infused in sesame oil. The resulting mixture has proven antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and enzymatic properties. The process attracts and removes bacteria, toxins and parasites that live in the mouth and the lymphatic system, and also releases mucus from the throat and frees up the sinuses. In the process it also helps to mineralise the teeth and strengthen the gums. Benefits of oil pulling frequently noted include relief from congestion in the throat and sinuses, less sensitive gums and teeth and whiter teeth, and many people even report great improvements to the complexion of their skin. The practice is certain to improve the sense of taste and to fight against halitosis.

When is the best time to practice oil pulling therapy?

The most beneficial time is before bed, after brushing the teeth with Ayurvedic herbal dental powder. It is even more effective if repeated in the mornings after breakfast as this will give 24 hour protection against bacteria, which mainly grow overnight. If the oil is warmed before use it will have a greater impact.

At Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre we have also formulated our own gum massage oil for oil pulling therapy which works in a similar way, but even when no oil is used Ayurvedic rock salt mixed with warm water can have great benefits.

A daily routine of this kind will be much more beneficial when it is matched to individual needs. If you would like to discuss your own requirements please contact the Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre on 1300 552 260.
