Varicose Veins Symptoms (Causes) Treatment

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged veins that are usually dark blue or purple in colour and may also be lumpy, bulging or twisted. They are generally found in the legs and feet. They are more common in women than in men and although they do not generally present a serious health concern they can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. In extreme cases, varicose vein surgery is sometimes performed to strip the veins but they will invariably grow back in a few years.

What causes varicose veins?

There is no single cause for varicose veins but numerous factors can contribute to their development. These include a poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, pregnancy, constant standing or sitting, and the natural process of ageing. All of these factors can cause the veins to lose their tone and the valves within the veins to lose the battle with gravity in their attempt to push the blood back towards the heart.

Ayurvedic treatment for varicose veins

Ayurvedic varicose veins treatment focuses strongly on diet. Junk food is seriously lacking in fibre which is vital for venous tone so there is an emphasis on fibrous fruits and vegetables. A Kapha reducing diet of light, dry and warm foods is utilised to improve lymphatic flow. However, anyone who has habitually consumed junk food over a prolonged period or who was born to a mother who did so will be prone to gut problems and the resulting clogging of the system will be likely to have an impact on the veins this can be one of the varicose veins causes. In such cases, dietary modifications alone will be insufficient to provide a permanent solution and there will be a need for Ayurvedic medicines to treat the root cause of the problem. The Ayurvedic medicines which are selected have the purpose of improving the function of the liver and large intestine and rejuvenating the tissues. Exercises such as Uttanpadasana, Bhastrika Pranayama and the Shoulder Stand can also be beneficial.

For Ayurvedic treatment of varicose veins to be effective, it must be undertaken at an early stage, as when a large amount of excess tissue has accumulated the process is much harder to reverse.
