Pelvic Organ Prolapse Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment

A prolapse occurs when an organ descends from its normal position and exerts pressure on another organ. In the case of a pelvic organ prolapse any one of a number of organs can descend into the vagina – the four most common scenarios are a prolapsed uterus, a prolapsed cervix, a prolapsed bladder and a prolapsed bowel.

The pelvic organ prolapse symptoms can vary greatly. It is frequently the case that no serious discomfort is experienced, or in certain cases it can cause pain occasionally, for example making sex very uncomfortable. In the most extreme cases surgery may be the only sensible option. Therefore, it is essential to not neglect any pelvic organ prolapse symptoms.

There are a number of possible reasons for a prolapse occurring. In general it is caused by a loss of tone in the tissues, for example the uterine muscles, which could be due to childbirth, weight gain or excessive exercise or lifting.

It is of course  important for a woman to be certain of the cause of her pelvic organ prolapse symptoms and a gynaecological checkup is a prerequisite. However, mainstream medicine will not be able to offer any medicine to effect a repair. The Ayurvedic pelvic organ prolapse treatment does however offer some answers to the problem, provided that it is caught in its early stages. Ayurveda has both medicines and topical preparations to help strengthen the tissues, contracting and toning the muscles, ligaments, tendons and fat cells of the affected organs.

Ayurveda sees the problem  as being indicative of Vata aggravation, with air being locked in the tissues. The Ayurvedic pelvic organ prolapse treatment therefore focuses on lowering Vata, taking care to avoid foods which aggravate Vata. Some yogic practices can help greatly, though some should be avoided. The most useful practices include Ashwani Mudra  and Kumbhak Pranayama (Retention), as well as the Shoulder Stand. In the case of prolapse it is very important to wear the langota when engaged in yogic practices. Chapter 6 of  “Yatan Yoga” gives comprehensive instructions on the use of this garment.
