Understanding Iron Absorption from an Ayurvedic Perspective

How do We Absorb Iron?

Iron metabolism is one of the first things that occurs after the ingestion of food. It begins with a chemical reaction in our stomach, where the iron in the food is exposed to stomach acid. This allows iron to be absorbed through the small intestine. The duodenum, a small tube-like structure in our intestine, and the colon absorb most the body’s iron.

Why is Iron Important?

Iron is essential for red blood production, and as such is one of the most important elements required by your body. It is the main component of haemoglobin, and is not only responsible for making red blood cells red, but is significant in the transportation of oxygen to and from the lungs. Cases of extreme iron deficiency will result in anaemia, or a reduction in the production of red blood cells resulting pale colour and exhaustion.

The Difference Between Ayurvedic and Contemporary Medical Understanding of Iron Metabolism

According to the contemporary understanding of anatomy and physiology, iron is only absorbed through the large intestine, or colon. According to Ayurvedic science, however, iron is also absorbed in part by the cells in the liver. Ayurvedic science claims that different body parts and organs require different types of iron concentration.

Contemporary medical practice advises that the treatment for iron deficiency predominantly rests upon iron supplementation—you take pill and that is it.

Ayurveda treats iron deficiency differently. Iron in the blood is different from the iron that is absorbed by liver cells, and this means that iron deficiency can be treated by supplying iron that can be target a more accessible absorption method. For example, jaundice and thyroid cause hormonal imbalances and indigestion along with iron deficiency. In this case, high concentration of iron cannot be absorbed through the intestines, so the patient is advised to consume easily digestible iron that can be absorbed by liver cells.

Ayurvedic science precisely focuses the correct target for iron absorption. For hormonal imbalance, a specific type of iron mixed with the correct hormones is used to increase hormones like oestrogen. Iron is important for the eyes. In case of iron deficiency causing visual and eye problems, Ayurveda advises the use of a specific herbal formulation that increases the concentration of iron in the eyes. Similarly, there is a different form of iron responsible for good function of the ears and hearing. In this case, an iron deficiency in the ears requires a special herbal formulation that targets iron concentration in the ears.
