Getting Pregnant – Female Infertility Causes & Treatment

Making a Baby  – Getting Pregnant the Ayurvedic Way

Infertility and especially female infertility is becoming a massive problem worldwide. There can be little doubt that a large part of infertility causes can be attributed to modern dietary and lifestyle trends that play havoc with the hormonal balance which is a pre-requisite in maintaining a regular ovulatory cycle and consequently the ability for getting pregnant.

IVF treatment is often recommended but in addition to being invasive, expensive and frequently ineffectual, it does nothing to rectify the imbalance that is the underlying cause of the problem.

Ayurvedic infertility treatment focuses not only on creating a child, but also on ensuring that the conditions are optimal for healthy development from conception to the time of birth. Any imbalances in the mother’s body might otherwise have an impact on the development of the unborn child, and this can often lead to birth defects or lifelong health problems.

Diet and digestion are of the utmost importance in preparing to conceive as well as throughout pregnancy. The human egg can only survive if there is a good acid-alkaline balance, so if the system is too acidic a preliminary detoxification will be called for. Attention is given to the purification of the blood and to the circulation in general. Impure blood leads to clotting and poor circulation can cause pain as the hormones are not able to circulate effectively; there will also be an inadequate blood supply to the uterus. The digestive function is optimised by cleansing the digestive system. Light meals are recommended, with an emphasis on fresh organic vegetables and sweet fruits, and nourishing soups. Fertility enhancing whole grains, nuts and seeds are introduced, while spicy and sour items are avoided, as is anything processed or excessively fatty.

Ayurveda has many herbal medicines for infertility treatment to detoxify and nourish the reproductive organs, thereby restoring natural rhythm and improving fertility. Shatavari, Lodhra and Ashoka are three of the most common. Circadian rhythms are also taken into account; there is a need for daily routines, in particular regular bedtimes and mealtimes. After ovulation and before menstruation daily Yoga practices can help to enhance the circulation.

Infertility can be a very complex issue for which there is no single answer. Ayurveda addresses every aspect of a patient’s health, not just the reproductive system. Rather than trying to force the body into a pregnancy for which it is unprepared, such a holistic approach is designed to remove the obstacles and supply the optimal conditions for Nature to complete her task without interference.
