Bacterial Allergic Viral Conjunctivitis Symptoms of Pink Eye Treatment

Conjunctivitis is a common condition, sometimes called pink eye, in which the conjunctiva – the thin layer of tissue across the front of the eye – becomes red and inflamed. Conjunctivitis symptoms, or symptoms of pink eye, include itchy, watery, red eyes and sometimes a sticky coating appears on the eyelashes. The condition may be caused by an infection (viral conjunctivitis or bacterial conjunctivitis) or an allergic reaction (allergic conjunctivitis), or simply by reaction to an irritant. Conjunctivitis often clears up by itself but sometimes it returns periodically, possibly at certain times of the year, and sometimes it is chronic, continuing for years.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, conjunctivitis is caused by excess Kapha flowing through the eyes, creating conditions for bacterial infection. This may also cause an aggravation of Pitta.

For conjunctivitis treatment providing immediate relief, Ayurveda recommends bathing the eyes with rock salt in warm water. An eyewash with Triphala water can also be very helpful. However, when the condition is chronic deeper treatment will be necessary and will involve detoxification of the liver and lymphatic system. Ayurveda has many liver medicines which can be very effective in chronic cases; some of these balance Kapha, some Pitta, and others both. A full detoxification can often prove very beneficial. When Kapha aggravates Pitta the tear ducts can become blocked, which leads to infection and in these cases blood purifying medicines such as Manjistha and Smilax China, may be prescribed. Bitter melon, with its excellent blood purifying qualities, is also a recommended food for this purpose

Certain Yogic practices can help the progress of conjunctivitis treatment, in particular Indian Push-Ups.
