Childhood Stress Management / Anxiety Disorders in Children Symptoms

Treatment For Anxiety in Children

Anxiety in children is a very common sight, whether it be the baby crying uncontrollably with fists clenched or the obstinate toddler throwing a tantrum. There was a time when an Indian parent might have taken their affected child to a sorcerer to have its evil spirits expelled; nowadays drugs are sometimes prescribed particularly if the distress causes respiratory distress in the child. There can be many reasons for childhood anxiety, ranging from hereditary to congenital or acquired. Planetary influences may also be a factor in anxiety disorders in children – Mars, in particular, can have a very powerful influence on depression and anxiety. However, regardless of the reason there is no need for any child to continue in this way and a stress management treatment plan would be the way to deal with this issue.

Symptoms of Anxiety in Children

Ayurveda sees the problem as being indicative of aggravation of Vata. When excess Vata invades the brain the mind cannot focus and anxiety often follows. Stress in children causes an excess of Adrenalin to be produced and the adrenal glands eventually become exhausted. The immune system is then greatly weakened, energy levels decline and the circulation becomes inadequate.

The Ayurvedic treatment for anxiety in children makes extensive use of herbs to calm the adrenals and to balance the brain hormones. Brahmi, Shankhapushpi and Jatamansi are a few of the most common. Tantrums soon become a thing of the past.

Hyperactivity in early childhood should be dealt with promptly, or it may lead to a variety of disorders such as ADHD or ADD when the child reaches school age. Short attention span, lack of self-control, learning problems, extreme mood changes and aggression are just a few of the afflictions that can result in the child having increasing difficulties forming peer relationships. These are modern problems that affect an increasing number of children in our overstimulated society where the concept of ‘calm’ often seems alien. How can a 5,000 year old science such as Ayurveda teach us how to treat what is essentially a modern ailment? The answer lies in the fact that Ayurveda is an energy science and all Ayurvedic treatments achieve their effect through the restoration of balance in the body’s energies.
