Ayurvedic Treatment for STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) Symptoms

Flushing Out Bacteria

In the early days of Ayurveda, long before there was any concept of bacteria and before contraception and condoms were invented, Ayurvedic natural medicines were already in use and working for all including STDs. The keepers of this health wisdom, both spiritually and physically were the gurus or teachers. It was they who had committed the Sacred Vedic texts to memory. So disciples would ask their gurus how they might be able to enjoy the pleasures of sex without the fear of contracting an STD such as herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea. The guru would advise a herbal mixture to be taken an hour before the act and another, different mixture after the event.

As an Ayurvedic Practitioner, it is my dharma (duty) to bring this ancient wisdom to my patients and in the process of introducing Ayurvedic treatments to my patients in Sydney and other parts of Australia, it occurred to me that this ‘flushing’ action of the gurus’ medicines to protect against sexually transmitted diseases could have other implications for health issues in the modern world, while avoiding the use of drugs.

So when one of my patients had persistent digestive problems, and on one occasion asked, “Raman Das, can you help me with travel sickness?” I approached the problem as follows. When there are adequate digestive enzymes in the system, as well as sufficient stomach acid to break down the food completely, bacteria are unable to survive. I therefore gave her a medicine that was designed to optimize the acid-alkaline balance in the gut, and also to lubricate the gut so as to ensure smooth transit. This herbal mixture incorporated saponins (soapy, frothy compounds present in many plants) and mucilaginous constituents to help maintain the mucus lining of the gut. It was also highly diuretic. In this way the passage of food from the stomach, all the way to waste disposal in the large intestine and bladder, was made so efficient that bacteria had no chance to take a hold. The lady’s travel sickness ceased to plague her. Ancient Ayurvedic health solutions translated for modern ailments!

When there is a sluggish flow in the system, bacteria can remain for days, allowing them an opportunity to multiply in the genital tract and possibly lead to the development of STI symptoms. A medicine taken before sex might contain saponins and mucilaginous ingredients and this would be followed afterwards by a highly diuretic mixture to promote flushing. Bacteria would stand less chance of taking up residence.
