Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) : Treatment and Diet

What is Chronic Fatigue?

Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) or CFS is a condition causing persistent fatigue which does not go away with sleep or rest. It usually develops between the early 20s and mid-40s and may affect either sex, although it is more common in females. Medical science has no explanation for the condition, although theories include viral infection, immune system problems, hormonal imbalance, or mental and emotional problems.

Ayurveda sees an irregular lifestyle, in such areas as hours of sleep and rising and eating times as being a primary cause when maintained over a long period. Vata aggravation begins in the gut but gradually increases to affect the different organs and the cells in general. As the cells become blocked they begin to starve and mitochondrial function is suppressed giving rise to chronic fatigue syndrome.

Another likely prime cause is constant exposure to electromagnetic fields. We are increasingly surrounded by technology that emits electromagnetic radiation, including computers, mobile phones, television, air conditioning, and power lines. People whose vitality is already low are particularly likely to be affected, as are those who work in environments such as nuclear plants.

Anyone affected by chronic fatigue should be promptly assessed for the cause. If, for example, it is the result of exposure to EMFs this can result in progression into multiple sclerosis if it is allowed to continue.

What is Ayurvedic chronic fatigue treatment?

Ayurvedic medicine treatment will target the immune system and a chronic fatigue syndrome diet will be advised adjusting to assisting in alkalizing and neutralizing the system. Seaweed and kelp are valuable for their iodine content and help to strengthen the thyroid. Medicines to boost the immune system are also utilized. Ashwagandha and Shankhpushpi are particularly effective. If the problem has arisen because of lifestyle the adrenals will need to be addressed and a Vata balancing lifestyle adopted as the biorhythms will be in need of adjusting, failing which all systems will be disrupted, leading to eventual systemic paralysis.
