Ayurvedic Treatment for Hoarseness

Most of us experience hoarseness from time to time. The most common cause is excessive talking which causes the capacity of the voice box to be exceeded. It is also frequently a result of an infection of the throat or upper respiratory tract. In either case the problem should resolve itself fairly quickly, but in cases of persistent hoarseness lasting for more than a few weeks or when the problem occurs repeatedly the underlying cause should be investigated without delay as it could be a warning of an impending obstruction of the respiratory tract, or of a developing disorder such as hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s disease. Another more serious, but less common cause is tuberculosis.

In Ayurveda hoarseness is seen to be caused by an excess of Vata blocking Kapha. Air is trapped in the throat, causing swelling. Ayurvedic treatment will utilise medicines which are directed at the underlying cause. For example, in the case of hypothyroidism specific thyroid medicines will need to be prescribed as throat medicines alone will be of little benefit.

In the more everyday cases of hoarseness some simple home remedies can be of benefit. Gargling with Ayurvedic rock salt can bring instant relief, as can drinking a teaspoon of raw honey in a cup of hot water a few times daily. Kapha aggravating foods, such as dairy products and most sweet items, should be avoided while light, warm and spicy foods can be beneficial.
