Ayurvedic Treatment for Brittle Nails

The nails on our fingers and toes can become subjected to a wide variety of nail infections, which affect both males and females of all ages. It is true to say that the deterioration of the nails is commonly regarded as an inevitable part of the aging process. However: pitted, discoloured, flaky, ridged and peeling nails are the most common symptoms of brittle nails and each of these tell their own story.

Weak brittle nails tend to split very easily, both on the fingers and the toes. Often – particularly above the age of 40 – the problem of dry brittle nails and/or thin brittle nails can simply be due to a lack of moisture or protein. Similarly, these same two causes can also be leading factors in dry and flaky skin.

There are, however, a number of other common causes of brittle nails. For example: Poor mineral status, the malabsorption of calcium, iron or zinc, or a decline in hormones – especially with increasing age – is equally likely reasons for the condition. Long-term exposure to chemicals such as detergents or nail polish remover can take their toll, and we must also take into account that there might be an underlying health problem, such as hypothyroidism. Now, when we know what causes brittle nails, it is easy to understand how steps toward the treatment and prevention of brittle nails can be made!!

Because there is no single treatment for brittle nails it is important to perform a careful analysis of the root cause for an effective brittle nail cure. In my own experience with patients in my clinic, I have frequently found that addressing the individual’s digestion and hormone balance has led to marked improvement in the condition of the brittle nails with ridges, although this is not always a quick fix if the problem has been allowed to exist for some time. Therefore it is necessary to understand each and every one of the brittle nail causes and its treatments and seek this out sooner rather than later.

Generally speaking: if the nails on both the fingers and the toes are brittle, an underlying health problem needs to be addressed. We can help you with this problem at the YATAN Holistic Ayurvedic Centre – just call us on 1300 552 260.
