Ayurvedic Massage Many Benefits

Massage as an aid to physical and mental relaxation needs no introduction, but it has in addition a huge number of physiological benefits.

An Ayurvedic massage is unique in its three primary aims, of rebalancing the doshas, encouraging energy flow, and reducing waste accumulation. Abhyanga massage is an important component of the Ayurvedic detoxification program, Panchakarma and provides a complete holistic health treatment.

A brief Ayurvedic consultation is always recommended in advance of the treatment, so that the client can be assessed with attention being given to body type and any specific health issues, for example any fungal or bacterial condition. With this information the therapist is able to customise the Ayurvedic massage, selecting appropriate oils or pastes, and will be able to focus on appropriate organs or areas for treatment. This process of oleation is known as ‘Snehana’.

An experienced therapist has the skill to understand how working in a particular direction will clear a nerve blockage or open up a lymph channel. Marma (trigger point) massage is often used to stimulate good blood flow through the marma points: neuro-muscular junctions that carry information between the muscles, nerves and brain. By stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system it slows down the systems that are in ‘overdrive’, affording them an opportunity for repair and renewal. By bringing the body back into a state of homeostasis hormone balance benefits greatly. Recent research has also noted strengthening of immunity through the stimulation of lymphocyte production.

Additional treatments to the Ayurvedic massage, such as steaming – Swedana – may be suggested. This utilises evaporation to sweat the toxins that have been broken down by the oils out of the body. The skin is the biggest surface of the body but it cannot breathe when it is clogged by waste. When it is removed in this way no damage is done to any organ or system.

Physically Ayurvedic massage helps all the body’s systems by stimulating the circulation of blood and lymph, and by restoring muscles to their normal relaxed state. Flexibility, mobility and posture are all seen to improve. Mentally it helps by removing nervous tensions. After a treatment there is a truly deep feeling of tension release accompanied by a sensation of lightness and increased flexibility. The mind feels more ‘open’.

Good massage is much more than pampering such as spa treatments and beauty treatments – it should be high on everybody’s list of favourite medicines.
