An Ayurvedic Practitioner Reveals Tips & Treatments for Hair Rejuvenation

Do you lose a handful of hairs when brushing? Are you noticing bald spots or a receding hairline? Or does your hair just look thin, dull, and grey? You may not have anything to worry about, particularly if you’re over the age of 50. But you might need to pay attention if you’re younger or experiencing additional worrisome symptoms.

Both men and women can experience hair loss, bald patches, and hair thinning, which are often normal due to ageing. But nowadays, we see even younger individuals dealing with hair and scalp-related problems. We also see hair treatments continuously fail, and people getting increasingly worried about not finding a solution that really works.

If you often wonder why you are suffering from hair loss and what you can do about, particularly from an all-natural Ayurvedic point of view, then keep reading.

The Ayurvedic View on Hair

Ayurveda, being a holistic science, views hair as an indication of internal health. If your hair lacks its lustre or looks unhealthy, then this is an indication that something is wrong in the internal body. It could be your hormones, organ function, even your psychology that is affecting your hair growth and health.

Hair is a by-product of bone. As bones cannot excrete the waste they accumulate, hair aids them by doing the job for them. This is why hair excretes sebum and even dandruff.

But hair has more functions that one. It also protects the body from extreme temperatures, like cold and heat. Hair additionally functions as an energy conductor, an “antenna” of sorts, which draws cosmic information into the body. Yogis have long been known to have plentiful hair, as this showcases their connections to the universe.

Ayurveda does not simply have its own view on hair, but also its own scientific approach and medicinal system when it comes to treating hair and scalp-related problems. In this article, I will aim to answer the most commonly asked questions that pertain to this.

Commonly Asked Questions

  1. Can Ayurveda help with hair regrowth? How does it work?

Ayurveda can most definitely assist with hair rejuvenation and regrowth. It is, however, not a quick fix, and the treatment prescribed may depend on your body type (dosha), medical history, and any underlying condition that may be causing the hair loss.

The Ayurvedic practitioner would specifically follow this protocol:

Step #1: He will examine the external body to identify the dosha and any associated symptoms.

Step #2: He will then prescribe an initial treatment plan to tackle the root cause of the hair loss problem while also providing medicine for stimulating hair growth.

Step #3:The Ayurvedic practitioner will reassess the treatment plan based on the patient’s progress or lack thereof. If the patient is still losing hair, the treatment plan will be tweaked accordingly.

Step #4: If the problem persists, the Ayurvedic practitioner will continue to investigate further. Based on the process of elimination, he will follow up with necessary readjustments to the treatment plan until the ideal medicine has been found and the root cause has successfully been tackled.

2. What causes hair loss?

Hair loss and thinning, if not due to ageing, can be caused by any of the following conditions:

bald
  • Digestive problems
  • Live problems
  • Imbalance of pH levels in the body (too acidic or too alkaline)
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Thyroid disorders (Hypothyroidism or Hyperthyroidism)
  • Deficiencies (particularly iron)
  • Alopecia
  • A toxin-congested system (dandruff may also be present)
  • Stress and psychological factors
  • Pitta (fire) imbalance

And there are certain other factors that do not cause hair loss per se, but rather aggravate and encourage it, such as:

  • Harsh shampoos, which strip the hair of its natural moisture.
  • Excessive blow-drying, which can easily cause dry-out.
  • Toxic hair products, which can add to the waste and toxins your hair is trying to get rid of.
  • Intense brushing, which can easily damage the hair and cause it to fall or break off.
  • Lack of brushing, which often results in tangled, brittle hair.
  • Hair accessories, like tight scrunchies or hairbands, that pull the hairs and cause tension in the follicle area.

To properly diagnose the root cause of your hair loss, you must first consult your health advisor and undertake any necessary tests.

3. Can natural oils help with hair regrowth?

hair oil

Natural oils and blends are a great option. They will, however, not tackle any underlying condition that may be causing the hair loss. Such oils will:

  • Stimulate the hair follicles
  • Supply and enhance blood flow to the head area
  • Condition and add moisture to the hair
  • Tackle scalp dryness and irritation
  • Ward off dandruff and other waste
  • Provide overall nourishment to the scalp

Oils have a natural ‘pulling’ effect. This is why they effortlessly remove what is not needed (dandruff, dryness, toxins) while nourishing and moisturising thanks to their rich vitamin and fatty acid content.

4. Which oil is best for a receding hairline?

The most effective oils to use for a receding hairlineor thinning hair in general are coconut oil, sesame oil, olive oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, walnut oil, and jojoba oil. But if we had to make one strong recommendation, that would be our Bhringaraj Hair Loss Treatment Oil.

5. Can you recommend an Ayurvedic medicine or treatment plan for hair regrowth?

We cannot provide a medicine or treatment plan over the Internet, because Ayurveda does not provide ‘one-fits-all’ medicine. If you seek Ayurvedic treatment for hair rejuvenation in Sydney, our consultants will tailor a treatment plan designed specifically for you and your body type after a thorough examination. This may include a combination of herbal concoctions, dietary recommendations, exercise, and lifestyle changes.

At Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre, we tend to prescribe a combination of the following:

hair herbal oil
  • Hair oils such as sesame, coconut, jojoba, or an Ayurvedic massage oil blend.
  • Ayurvedic herbs such as Omala, Bhringaraj, Arjuna, and/or Vasa (dosages must always be prescribed by an Ayurvedic practitioner; do not attempt to take any of these herbs without a proper consultation first).
  • Dietary recommendations such as adding more chlorophyll to your diet (leafy greens, green foods), or eating more beetroot and carrot.
  • Detox such as Panchakarma to unblock and release the waste from your system.
  • Yoga exercise designed to boost the endocrine system, such as Saravangasana (Shoulder Stand) and Uttanpadasana (Raised Leg Pose). If you don’t know how to do these poses, you can always consult the Yatan Yoga Book for instructions and beginner-friendly guidance.

Conclusion

Ayurveda can most definitely help you regrow your hair. It can encourage hair rejuvenation and treat hair loss, hair thinning, dandruff, greying, and a host of hair and scalp-related conditions. However, such a treatment would need to be tailored to the individual according to their dosha. The treatment plan may also take some time (though well worth it), until the perfect medicine has been pinpointed.

To start preventing further hair loss today, you can start by tweaking your diet, massaging therapeutic oils into your hair, and trying out Yoga.
