Haemorrhoids Piles Symptoms | Haemorrhoids Treatment

Putting Haemorrhoids Behind Us

Haemorrhoids, more commonly known as ‘piles’, are sac-like structures containing lymph and small blood vessels. They are located around the area of the sphincter muscle at the exit from the anus, and can be internal, or external, or both. Either type can cause haemorrhoids symptoms  – discomfort, ranging from itching to severe pain, and there may even be bleeding.

Most modern haemorrhoids treatments concentrate on local shrinking or surgical removal of the sacs. But the haemorrhoids are very likely to return if the root cause is not addressed. The Ayurvedic approach is to address that underlying problem, rather than an external symptom.

The most likely focus for the treatment of haemorrhoids is the liver. An overly acid system results in irritation and inflammation of the hepatic circulatory and nervous systems, and this can spread to any part of the body. There is a clear need to address the diet. Spices, such as chilli, cayenne, tamarind, ginger and garlic in Ayurvedic terms aggravate Pitta, and should be avoided. Such foods trigger acidity in the system; many Indian people consume an excess of hot spice and of course, when Australians adopt the spiced cuisine they become susceptible to these problems, as their doshas become imbalanced.

Once on my travels in India I ran out of ghee and asked a local person to supply me with some; it became my opportunity to take the spirit of Ayurveda back to its place of origin. This person told me that he was suffering with haemorrhoids and would like me to supply him with some medicine. I explained that I was not carrying any medicines on my travels, but special dietary approaches can be as effective as medicine when used correctly. I advised him to take a large glass of buttermilk with 20 grams of Makhana (fox nuts) on an empty stomach each day. After seven days he returned with some fresh ghee and announced happily that his haemorrhoids had vanished in three days, I explained how this was Ayurveda in action relieving his piles symptoms. I told him to continue taking the remedy for 21 days.

After years of suffering and trying different pharmaceutical medicines without success he had cured his haemorrhoids at no cost. Many home remedies are as effective as medicines in restoring acid-alkaline balance. As with so many things in life, we need to be shown the way, and the ways of Ayurveda have been honed for more than 5,000 years.
