Fungal Infections of the Feet

Amongst roughly 1.5 million known species of fungus on earth, only 300 of these are known to cause nail infection problems in humans. These fungal nail infections can reside in any part of the body but seek out their preferred environment within warm and damp conditions. Nail infections of the toes are most prevalent amongst fungal nail infections. These foot fungi grow by utilizing keratin – a dead protein material. Toe fungus grows very rapidly in a situation where the individual frequently wears tight footwear or socks and shoes made of synthetic materials, as the feet are then unable to ‘breathe’ adequately. Athletes’ foot is by far the most common of these fungal nail infections. These fungal infections on the feet then spread to neighbouring toes through connecting skin and thus also cause fungal infections of the skin. This results in excessive itching, redness and then the blackening of toe nails and surrounding skin. If not properly treated it can spread to the nails, which can become thick and yellow then break easily. The cracks in the skin can also make the feet vulnerable to invasion by more pathogenic organisms.

Now the question arises of how to treat fungal infections on feet. To answer this there are many topical medicines available: over the counter and by prescription for nail fungus treatment; but while these can appear to be effective in the short term, the problem will generally relapse. It is sometimes advisable that adopting an alkaline diet will serve the purpose of fungal nail infection treatment or fungal skin infection treatment mainly needed to discourage any overgrowth of fungi. However, ayurevedic intervention may be the best fungal nail treatment. Ayurvedic fungal nail infection treatment of athletes’ foot involves the use of herbal medicines that effectively change the blood chemistry; blood sugar levels in particular can have a profound effect in encouraging fungal overgrowth.

These toe nail fungus treatments should be prompt and thorough as they can otherwise lay the body vulnerable to more serious infections, or in extreme cases can even cause protein to enter the bloodstream where it can give rise to allergic reactions.
