Ayurvedic Treatment For Neck Pain

A painful or stiff neck is a very common problem which is not usually indicative of an underlying condition. People who work with their head and neck at a constant angle, for example looking at a computer screen, are particularly susceptible to the problem, but it can also be caused by something as simple as sleeping in an awkward position or sitting in a draught. Anxiety and stress can also cause tension in the neck muscles, and this can lead to neck pain.

However, if the pain is persistent it should be addressed without delay, before more serious problems follow. A stiff neck can often give rise to headaches and eye problems and can even affect the circulatory and nervous systems. The carotid arteries, which are a main carrier of blood to the brain, travel through the neck.

Ayurveda sees neck pain as an aggravation of Vata, often caused by repetitive strain. Ayurvedic treatment sets out to prevent excess Vata (wind) invading the brain and spinal cord, but it is first essential to be sure of the exact cause of the problem and of the stage to which it has progressed. In primary stage cases many yoga practices can be very helpful, particularly Neck Rotation, the Cobra Posture, the Lotus Posture and the Hare Posture, but in more chronic cases Vata balancing diet and medicines are required. In the case of people over 40 the problem can be hormonal, as this is a time when levels tend to drop, in which case hormone production is addressed. Care must be taken to check for any blockage of arteries or for a thyroid problem, while in cases where there is a cracking sound on moving the head there will be a clear need for lubrication, to prevent the possibility of disc prolapse. Finally, any treatment plan will often include Ayurvedic massage.

As always, Ayurvedic treatment is highly individualized, taking into account a wide range of factors in arriving at a treatment plan. Rather than merely setting out to control pain it looks closely at underlying causes and other contributory factors such as age and occupation. A customized regime including dietary advice, appropriate herbal medicines, gentle yogic exercises and Ayurvedic massage can then be offered as an effective solution to the problem.
