Ayurvedic Treatment For Breast Milk Production

Breast milk is the only complete food for an infant. Certain hormones which are secreted after pregnancy stimulate its production. It contains a host of vital nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and digestive enzymes that are required for growth, as well as important antibodies to keep the baby free of infections. It is also good for the gut flora and is much more digestible than any other form of milk. Infant formulas are often used as a substitute but these often create problems such as colic.

Unfortunately, modern diet and lifestyle factors affect milk production in many women, causing the supply to be inadequate or of poor quality. Toxins (ama) which have accumulated in the body may block the secretion of hormones with the effect of stopping or reducing milk production. Occasionally, even when the supply is adequate the milk is toxic and may have to be purified. Some women are unable to produce sufficient milk for their firstborn but do not have the same problem with their second child.

Ayurveda has a system for preparing women during pregnancy so that these problems can be avoided. A major emphasis is on selecting foods which encourage natural milk production, and on avoiding foods which are a hindrance. Even after birth, Ayurveda has many treatments to offer, and some effective medicines, such as Shatavari, but treatment is carried out according to the individual problem. Doshic assessment is very revealing, as Kapha governs milk production. If there is excess Pitta the milk supply may dry out through too much heat, and in the case of excess Vata the channels can themselves dry out. In some cases the digestion or the liver function requires attention and hormone production may need to be addressed . but a doshic assessment is first carried out. Where the channels are blocked Ayurvedic formulas, consisting of oils or pastes, can be supplied so that the woman can massage her own breasts and restore the flow. Quantity and quality, concentration and purity, are all taken into account.

When the mother has a healthy milk production this will supply the best possible means of treating any health problem in the infant, and will even provide an effective way of delivering medicines to the child.
