Ayurvedic Assessment Of Hypothyroidism

Conventional testing methods for the detection of thyroid problems generally involve a blood test which is designed to measure the levels of the various thyroid hormones. In the absence of any technology an Ayurvedic assessment is totally dependent on careful observation of signs and symptoms which the body provides that indicate an inner imbalance. In the case of hypothyroidism there are many ways in which such signs and symptoms can appear in the region of the neck.

Typically these may take the form of fat accumulation which can be one-sided or bi-lateral, or can result in a double chin. Sometimes a pouch forms behind the chin, rather like the ‘wattles’ that hang from the throat of a chicken, or in other cases a goitre-like lump may form. There may be a discolouration of the skin, either in the front of the neck in the thyroid region or around the bottom of the neck, or a white spot may appear in front of the thyroid. Any such discolouration is generally an indication that the liver is affected, as all pigmentation is produced by the liver. There are other ways that the skin might be affected; it can become rough textured around the front of the neck and on occasions the rough scaly condition known as Keratosis pilaris may develop – a sure sign that the thyroid is compromised.

An underactive thyroid can express itself in countless other ways. The most common symptoms include constant fatigue and weight gain problems. Sufferers often become sluggish and lacking in motivation and may complain of constantly cold hands or feet. A persistent nagging cough can also be a sign, and the voice may sometimes start to change or it may become difficult to talk for a long time.

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms it is important to consider the possibility that your thyroid function is sub-optimal. It is now firmly established that hypothyroidism is linked to autoimmune disease, in particular to diabetes, so it is vital to take action at an early stage to prevent the problem from progressing.
