Ayurvedic Treatment of Bleeding Gums

If you are suffering from bleeding gums this can be a sign either that you are at risk for, or that you already have, gum disease.

Ayurveda sees bleeding gums as a Pitta problem. Pitta should be distributed evenly throughout the body but when the liver is sluggish the resulting congestion causes Pitta to go in one direction; when the accumulation takes place in the gums they are unable to hold the blood.

The Ayurvedic treatment therefore focuses on balancing Pitta. This is mainly achieved through treating the liver and improving the digestion by means of internal medicines. Herbal decoctions are also used for rinsing the mouth. Deficiency of a mineral such as calcium or iron can often be a contributory factor, in which case the mineral in question can be included in the medicine. Another common cause is a build-up of toxic waste (ama) resulting from a digestive problem. When there is an excess of mucus or extreme acidity (aggravation of Kapha) this can lead to bacterial infection. If a person who is suffering from bleeding gums appears to be strong in all other respects this is  an indication of an internal problem.

With so many possible variations between cases the need for careful individual analysis is clear. In general, this is not a problem that one can expect to clear up very quickly as the causes can range far beyond poor oral hygiene. Certain routines are, however, an important part of the treatment.

Many Ayurvedic oils are available for massaging the gums. Toxins accumulate overnight so this should be done before going to sleep. Ayurvedic tooth powder should also be used at night as this will give 12 hours immunity from bacterial growth. Foods which are recommended include all bitter vegetables; dandelion and bitter gourd are also helpful, as is the renowned herbal remedy, Triphala.  Certain types of yogic breathing exercises, such as Shitali Pranayama and Sitkari Pranayama, can be very beneficial.

If you are certain that your oral hygiene is good and yet you are still troubled by bleeding gums it is important to investigate the underlying cause, as the situation will only worsen if left untreated. Call the Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre on 1300 552 260 to book your consultation.
