Holistic Health Care: The Many Health Benefits Of Ayurvedic Massage

The Many Health Benefits Of Ayurvedic Massage

Massage needs no introduction as an effective way to reduce stress and Ayurvedic massage is no different. Our hectic lifestyle often puts the autonomic nervous system into overdrive and massage can have a very calming effect. However, its benefits go way beyond mere relaxation it is also an effective form of holistic health care. Scientific studies into the manner in which it achieves stress relief have demonstrated a lowering of heart rate and blood pressure, as well as cortisol and insulin levels. These effects are maintained long after the session is completed. Another major benefit of Ayurvedic massage is the improvement in the circulation of blood and lymph, which results in improved function of all the body’s systems, and helps to prevent such problems as fluid retention and cramps. As well as relaxing and softening tired and overused muscles it exercises and stretches both weak and tight muscles, helping to make the joints looser and improving flexibility. Further research has found an increase in the activity of the body’s natural killer cells, resulting in a strengthening of the immune system.

According to Ayurvedic principles, pain and discomfort are a result of an accumulation of Vata (air), whether in the lymphatic system, the nerves, the arteries, or any of the body’s tissues. The purpose of massage is to release the Vata from the site of accumulation. Whereas medicines can take days or weeks before they have an effect the benefits of Ayurvedic massage are often immediate.

Ayurvedic massage is unique in that it utilizes herbs that are carefully selected to suit the requirements of the individual. This involves an initial assessment of the body type and any imbalances that are to be addressed, this ensures a complete holistic health approach to the treatment. The herbs used are subtle in nature and easily absorbed – often herbs that can also be taken orally in medicines. They are mixed with sesame oil as this is known to be a superb carrier oil, enhancing the absorptive properties. As the skin is the body’s largest area for absorption this is a highly efficient mechanism for delivery.

Lowering excess Vata is not automatically assumed to be the sole aim of an Ayurvedic massage. There might be a need to treat aggravated Pitta or Kapha: the mucus accompanying the latter solidifies and causes clogging, and the oil chosen will serve to dissolve the mucus. Whether the main problem is a blockage from excess air or a clogging caused by mucus the circulation will be affected.

Ayurvedic Massage can be of great benefit to everybody because of its unique ability to activate the cellular function. There is surely no more pleasant way to enhance our bodily well-being.
