The Designer Menopause – Is Extending Fertility a Good Idea?

I have just read in the Sydney Morning Herald that a new technique is available for putting the menopause ‘on ice’ – literally! A small sample of ovarian tissue is taken from the woman and frozen until a later date, when it can be reimplanted to restore fertility.

Although it has so far only been used on a small number of women whose fertility has been threatened by illness doctors say that in the future the treatment could possibly be offered any woman who wants to become pregnant in her late 40s and 50s and usually during that time would be experiencing menopause symptoms and decreased fertility.

Is this really such good news? It is well known that older women are much more at risk of giving birth to children with genetic disorders. For example, while there is chance of a woman in her 20s having a Down’s Syndrome baby the risk rises at age 45 to about one in 30. At age 40 there is a 35% risk of a miscarriage and at 45 it rises to 60%. Other problems, such as high blood pressure, which can be fatal, uterine fibroids, gestational diabetes and ectopic pregnancy are much more likely in older women. Also, babies do not grow as well in older women. This is because with increased age the woman’s digestive system slows down, with the result that many vital nutrients are not supplied to the foetus through the mother’s bloodstream.

Menopause and the onset of perimenopause symptoms are a completely natural process which cannot be prevented, but the age at which it takes place is totally related to the rate of aging. Where unhealthy dietary and lifestyle practices have led to an accumulation of imbalances it is far more likely that it will occur prematurely and the symptoms of menopause will be exacerbated. If any early menopausal symptoms are treated with the help of Ayurvedic medicine and Ayurvedic dietary advice, there is no reason that these imbalances cannot be corrected and the aging process slowed down. This would seem to be a far preferable approach to forcing the body into a situation for which it is not prepared.
