What causes Cellulite?

Cellulite is one of the foremost confidence killers, and it affects as many as 90% of women. Men can sometimes be affected too, but this is much rarer. There are many contributory factors, but the cause of the orange peel texture, affecting mainly the buttocks, the thighs, the hips, and the underarm areas, is the weakening of connective tissue near the skin surface.

What is Cellulite?

The weakened connective tissue allows fat to squeeze through the spaces, giving rise to the honeycomb appearance of the skin. Hormonal changes, dietary factors, slow metabolism, and dehydration can all play a part in this process. Naturally, a variety of treatments have been developed to address the problem of cellulite.

Cellulite Treatment:

In the early 90s I was in the Russian city of Saratov, involved in research on yoga therapy and herbal medicine, in collaboration with a number of doctors. The aim was to find out how these therapies could complement mainstream cellulite treatment. One of these doctors had a lady patient who was very anxious to have cellulite treatment but was not prepared to submit to liposuction – the standard surgical procedure. Apart from bruising, which remains even months after the operation, this procedure interferes with the natural circulation and waste removal processes of the body. It is also not guaranteed to last. The doctor asked me whether any of my treatments might be able to help the lady and I agreed to see what could be done.

With the help of a nurse, the lady was treated with Ayurvedic herbal pastes applied externally to stimulate lymphatic flow and she was given Ayurvedic herbal medicines to increase her digestive power and improve liver function. Within seven days, involving seven one-hour sessions of cellulite treatment, she was seen to achieve a dramatic improvement in terms of fat reduction, greater flexibility, and weight loss.

Ayurvedic treatment for cellulite involves reducing Kapha. A recommended Ayurvedic diet will favour foods that are light, dry, or warm. When Kapha builds to excess the initial problems if left untreated can progress to more serious conditions such as inflammation and lymphatic blockages which can move upwards and cause havoc in any system of the body.
