Chronic fatigue Syndrome: Symptoms, Diet & Treatment

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

Experts estimate that at any given time one in ten of us experiences constant tiredness. As a result of our busy and stressful modern lifestyle most of us will experience tiredness from time to time, and in most cases this should be resolved by a good night’s sleep, but for some people it becomes a chronic problem which undermines their day-to-day functioning and significantly affects their quality of life. Such people frequently complain of a complete loss of motivation and go on to develop chronic fatigue.

There are many possible reasons for persistent tiredness. It can happen is a natural part of the aging process as hormone levels decline with age, thyroid function and enzyme production becomes less than optimal, and there is a general slowing down of the metabolism. For many, however, the problem is experienced regardless of age and it is important in the first instance to check for an underlying health problem such as anaemia, diabetes, hypothyroidism or chronic fatigue syndrome. Psychological issues, such as anxiety or depression, can also be a factor.

Research has shown, however, that in the majority of cases persistent tiredness has its roots in poor dietary and lifestyle habits. The habitual consumption and processed foods and fast methods of preparation such as microwaving will inevitably lead to a mineral deficiency and the depletion of vital nutrients. A lack of routine, such as irregular hours of sleep, causes disruption to the body’s biorhythms which will inevitably give rise to an ongoing chronic condition as the brain hormones are thrown into disarray.

It is easy to see that energy pills or drinks cannot hope to offer anything more than a very temporary solution to this problem and in fact when they are consumed habitually they will ultimately make matters worse by disrupting the body’s sugar levels.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Treatment:

In Ayurveda all tiredness is seen as a Vata disturbance and Vata management is a part of any treatment plan. Once the organs or systems involved have been identified the appropriate Ayurvedic medicine can be prescribed, but equally important is attention to Ayurvedic diet so that any existing deficiencies can be remedied, and lifestyle routines such as sleep and exercise are addressed so as to restore a healthy balance to the whole system.
