Total Health Management

You’ve by no doubt heard this type of question many times: “I always eat organic food so why am I constantly feeling unwell?” The simple answer is that no matter how good your diet might be, if your body is out of balance it will not be able to extract all the nutrients from the food it is given. The response to that might be: “But I take all the necessary vitamins and minerals every day as supplements, just to make sure I am not missing out on anything important”. Sadly, the same applies – an out of balance system will not utilize these nutrients. Ask anybody what are the essentials in assuring good healthy life style and in virtually every case the answer will be: “a good diet and lots of exercise”.

This is only a part of the full story. To begin with, how much food should you really be eating, and how much exercise is necessary? Too much of anything good exceeds the body’s capacity, and a good rule of thumb is to follow the Ayurvedic advice which talks about holistic healing and aim for one half of the body’s natural capacity, in both eating and exercising: any more will begin to put a stress on the system. At the same time the amount of food should reflect the amount of energy being expended throughout the individual’s lifestyle and occupation; somebody who is doing hard manual work will need to eat more than somebody who spends all day sitting at a desk. It is also important to steer clear of misleading dietary advice, such as “avoid salt and sugar at all costs”. These two items are essential in our diet, but we need to be careful to get them from the right sources (see our blog on this subject). It is even sometimes important to consume extra salt, as for example in a hot climate when it is lost through perspiration. Sugar is fine when eaten in its natural form such as in fruits and vegetables, complemented with fiber.

Once the dietary and exercise components are under control, what else remains? Surely now lasting good health is guaranteed? As a matter of fact, these two factors are only half the story. Ayurveda has always taught that lifestyle is as important as any other factor in achieving and maintaining good health, as a disorderly lifestyle causes the body’s bio rhythmic balance to be disrupted. Many factors need to be considered – the hours of sleeping, waking and eating, and the correct times to perform certain functions to maintain the body’s natural equilibrium, just to name a few. For example: how many people know that 6 a.m. is the ideal time for rising and that this is the time when the kidneys need a good flushing? In fact it is true to say that when one’s lifestyle is out of balance one can never expect to feel really good for long.

Along with proper food and enough exercise, Ayurvedic science has another alternative which describes the use of unique health products or complete health products. These products are simply single or multiple herbs formulated as a natural product for treatment of specific ailments.

This is the inspiration for the YATAN lifestyle kits or health kits. These consist of a carefully selected range of products that make the performance of daily health-enhancing routines much simpler and more enjoyable. They make an ideal gift for family or friends.
