Dry Eye Syndrome Diseases Symptoms (Causes) Treatment

Dry eyes or Dry eye syndrome is an extremely common and frequently debilitating condition. It can affect any age group but is particularly common amongst older people and post-menopausal women. Dry eye symptoms can include eye soreness, constant irritation and blurred vision. Sometimes there is a feeling as if there is sand or grit in the eye. The irritation may cause an increased tendency for the eyes to water, but when this happens the fluid is too thin and soon dries up.

What Causes Dry Eyes?

The condition is rarely regarded as serious and sufferers are commonly advised to use artificial tears, gels or ointments to lessen the discomfort. However, these have no lasting benefit and the user is in danger of becoming dependent upon them. In fact, the problem is a systemic one and there is a need to look more deeply for the causes of dry eyes. Only in recent years ophthalmological research has discovered a positive connection between a decline in hormone levels and dry eyes symptoms. Low levels of androgen have been identified in many cases but it is my belief that any male or female hormone may contribute to dry eyes causes. If such an imbalance is left untreated other more serious problems are likely to occur later, for example the memory and the brain may be affected. I have personally noted dramatic improvements in patients when hormone balance has been addressed.

Ayurveda attributes the problem to a Vata imbalance, in which an excess of air causes the tear ducts to dry out. Ayurvedic treatment therefore focuses on decreasing Vata. The medicines chosen in dry eyes treatment vary according to the severity of the situation, but their general purpose is to increase hormone production and lubricate the system internally. Certain foods can be very beneficial when introduced into the diet. These include avocados, bananas, asparagus, carrots, beetroot and coriander. Walking outside on the grass before or just after sunrise is also recommended. Another very helpful practice is the daily use of the Neti pot with salt water to aid in the relief of the symptoms of dry eyes.
