Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Symptoms & Treatment – During Menopause

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Symptoms During Menopause:

Menopause is a time when the production of hormones declines, and when this happens all the organs start to dry out. This is particularly noticeable in the skin, the eyes, reproductive organs and urinary tract. When the secretions in the female genito-urinary tract are adequate they contain antibacterial substances that minimise the chance of urinary tract infection. However when the production slows down bacteria and fungi are much more likely to colonise the reproductive organs and urinary tract, causing symptoms of UTI such as irritation, pain, burning and stress. Antibiotics are commonly used to control urinary tract or bladder infection, but these can cause further drying out and the situation worsens. As the acid – alkali balance is disturbed the bacterial colonisation tends to increase.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Treatment:

The Ayurvedic treatment for UTI focuses first on short term relief. This is achieved by optimizing the pH of the genito-urinary tract. In the longer term the treatment addresses the balance of hormones.

While the menopause treatment is in progress a number of tips can be helpful with regard to ways of gaining quick relief from UTI symptoms. Shatavari oil can be used internally. Foods that can be useful include choko and water melon, and it is important to drink plenty of water – half a litre before breakfast and again throughout the day. If the irritation is very intense it is a good idea to sit for some time in a hot bath.

Some yogic exercises, such as Sitkari Pranayama, are very beneficial in that they help to calm the parasympathetic nervous system.
