Autoimmune Disease | Low Immune System Disorders | Immune Deficiency

The immune system is the body’s defence against infectious organisms and other invaders. It is made up of a network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to protect the body. The white blood cells, for example, have the function of seeking out and destroying disease-causing organisms or substances. While a weak or low immune system makes us susceptible to virtually any disease it is also possible when the system is out of balance for the immune response to become overactive or misdirected resulting in autoimmune disease.

The standard mainstream approach to treating immune system disorders or autoimmune disorders is suppression of symptoms. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, do this quite effectively but at a cost. Apart from lowering resistance to any disease that happens to be lurking these drugs can have many serious side-effects and also lure the system into an artificial state of dependency. In the meantime the original problem, which might be the adrenals, the thyroid or the nervous system, to name just a few, remains completely untreated. To make matters worse we now have a series of problems where we had originally just one.

To provide an effective treatment for autoimmune diseases we need to understand what causes an immune system imbalance in the first place. According to Ayurveda, a perfect balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha enables all the cells to function optimally. This balance is dependent upon a great variety of factors, many of which involve diet and lifestyle. The Ayurvedic view is that when there is an excess of Vata air is trapped in the nervous system, suffocating the cells. This in turn causes a reduction of Pitta, resulting in a slowing down of the metabolic processes. Waste accumulates and the transport systems are compromised, so that the cells are deprived of their nutrients. When the supply to the bone marrow is depleted this affects vitality, sex drive and the immune system (creating immune deficiency) – the kingpin of good health. Ayurvedic treatment seeks to restore balance by optimising the digestion and removing the toxic waste which is causing the system to clog.

In short, the Ayurvedic treatment of immune system diseases and autoimmune disorder depends upon strengthening the system rather than suppressing its responses, and the medicines which are used for this purpose are often exactly the same as those given to boost vitality and the production of sex hormones – both male and female.
