 Rinsing removes mucus and irritants, but it also strips the natural protective film from the mucous membrane. Applying nasal oil afterwards — a practice called Nasya in Ayurveda — restores that film, helps maintain the pH and integrity of the lining, and provides a barrier against airborne pollutants. Skipping this step is the most common reason people find nasal rinsing leaves them dry.

Ayurvedic rock salt (Saindhava lavana) has a high level of potassium and other minerals, and while it is penetrative and efficient at removing pollutants and mucus, it does so without disturbing the pH of the nasal membranes. Table salt contains iodine and anti-caking agents that irritate the nasal lining. Use half to one level teaspoon per 400ml.

This is usually caused by sinus blockage or inflammation and generally resolves with continued use. It often helps to add an extra spoon of rock salt. Bending forward and turning your head side to side helps clear residual water, as does gentle nose-blowing without pinching either nostril closed.

Rinse the pot with warm soapy water after every use, dry completely inside and out, and air dry upside down so all water drains from the spout. Proper drying prevents salt residue buildup that may cause surface rust around the spout joint.
