Ayurvedic Remedies
Ayurvedic medicines and supplements
are traditionally classified as being for Vata, Pitta or Kapha imbalances,
hence often one type of preparation is able to treat many disorders.
One example is medication for
sinus problems, which also works for digestion, influenza, headache, and general
vitality. When Pitta is low
then Fire (Agni) is low, and toxic sustances start to accumulate in
different channels of the body due to low metabolic rate.
This creates congestion in the flow of energy in the different
channels. When this
occurs, blockage of the mind, no willpower, no inspiration, depression,
anxiety, all sorts problems can result.
Almost all the medicine in Ayurveda
is based on not only alleviating the present symptoms but rebuilding and
healing the vital system – the result being long term relief (assuming
that to reduce possibility of recurrence you also adjust your lifestyle to
better suit your dosha type!)
Raman Das has a large selection of Ayurvedic
preparations and herbs available which he combines for specific individual
needs after consultation. According to Ayurvedic principals, a
single herb may have an imbalancing/aggravating effect upon the doshas,
and so many herbs are combined together to counterbalance this factor.
Many formulations contain 10, 20 or more types of herbs and minerals and
are often ground for many hours over a period of days or months to
increase their potency.
The way in which the preparation is ingested has
importance. It is taken with an appropriate vehicle (eg. honey, warm milk,
water, juice) which also combines to provide a therapeutic effect.
Rejuvenating preparations (Rasayanas) can be taken by
anyone who wishes to rejuvenate their body system. For example: one of the
best Rasayanas is Shilijit. In the summer season the peaks of
the Himalayas ooze with a tar-like substance and this is collected,
purified and processed fit for consumption. This medication is used
for vitality, bone strength and as an aphrodisiac.
In the case of parasitic
infections, there are Ayurvedic preparations which work by not killing the
parasites directly, but through modifying the medium of the affected
systems in the body to an extent where these parasites can no longer
thrive.
Food
as Medicine
According to the Ayurvedic
concept certain foods work like a medicine and rejuvenate the body system.
For example: if a woman has a urinary/genital disorder or a kidney
problem she should take fresh asparagus. Fresh asparagus taken for
41 days or 21 days in a year according to the condition detoxifies
and nourishes these particular systems.
Kalpa
(course of food or herbs for certain period)
This is a method of Ayurveda
to rejuvenate the body system with herbs, medicine, food or minerals.
The individual is to take the prescribed treatment for certain
days, months or years , in certain quantity, and in certain seasons.
For example: Aswagandha Withania -
if this is taken with an appropriate vehicle (eg honey, warm milk)
for a certain period then it gives sexual potency to a man if he has
sexual debility.
