Yoga Problems

Yoga posture related problems

There are various sicknesses that arise from incorrect yoga practice and lack of guidance. These include; knee pain due to tearing of the tendons and ligaments, back pain, neck pain, biorhythmic imbalance, ankle pain, emaciation of adipose tissue and instability of the mind.

Reasons for these problems: trying to bend any area of the body without proper flexibility, not warming up before practice, bending the body beyond its limit of flexibility, holding the posture for too long, climatic conditions and cultural lifestyle that limit flexibilty e.g. Asian people generally are more flexible than Western people.

Pranayama related problems

If pranayama is practiced incorrectly or without the proper guidance the person can experience: excess thirst, poor quality of sleep, shaky feeling in the entire body, feeling unsteady both physically and mentally, become too emotional, excessive sexual desire, disturbance of the natural flow of the breath, bronchitis, asthma, respiratory alkalosis, heightened sensitiveness and mental agitation, fearful dreams and excess heat in the head or body.

Reasons for these problems: irregular and unsupervised practice, holding the breath beyond the body’s capacity, practicing sessions of pranayama which are too long, no discipline in the daily routine, lack of knowledge about which practices are contraindicated in certain illnesses e.g. if a person suffers with asthma or TB they should practice pranayama under supervision only.

Meditation related problems

Heavy eyes, feeling introverted, desire to be left alone, restless sleep, sleep paralysis, strange dreams and feeling that you are going to die.

Reasons for these problems: not following a regular routine of practice, sessions are too long, mixing together different styles of meditation without proper knowledge of them.

Kundalini related problems

Before, during and after the awakening of Kundalini a person who practices this may experience symptoms that can be problematic. For example: nervousness, sleeping disturbances, fainting, loss of appetite, fear, negative feelings about the future, lack of motivation to carry out their usual daily work, always want to be either inside or outside, headaches, hot flushes in the head, unable to satisfy their sexual desire, skin problems, hypertension, force their opinions onto others, they believe that their opinions and ideas are always right and that other people’s are wrong, pitta/vata aggravation, want to travel to new places and talk to new people however their conversation has no direction and their style of speaking is very forceful, fear of bifurcation of the physical body from the subtle bodies.

Reasons for these problems: insufficient knowledge of the process of Kundalini, practicing without proper guidelines, practicing Kundalini whilst living a hectic lifestyle, irregular routine of practice, not following a step-by-step process, practicing without a teacher or guru, not following the specific diet required for proper Kundalini practice.
